St. Stephen Church & Child Care

St. Stephen Church, founded in 1900 as Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, is the first newly-constructed church in Denver’s Stapleton neighborhood.

The church’s new, 3.4-acre campus features a 22,000-square-foot church and stretches along the heavily-traveled Montview Boulevard, the neighborhood’s southern boundary. Neighbors include the Denver School of Science and Technology, an apartment complex of hundreds of units and hundreds of single-family homes, all within walking distance. The residential surroundings required a job- site-specific safety plan — which the Gilmore team executed with great care. Gilmore also worked carefully and regularly with the church’s leaders — many of whom have no professional construction experience — to make the most of the project’s budget and to keep the congregation appropriately informed.

The church’s new campus is being developed in phases. Gilmore delivered the first phase of construction, which includes a learning center providing care and educational instruction for children 6 weeks to 13 years of age.

Also included in the first phase is a 500-seat fellowship hall (currently used as the sanctuary), church of ces and classrooms for adult education and other church services. The campus’ second phase of construction will include a 580- seat sanctuary on the same site.
